Review: St. Tropez’s Self Tan Purity Bronzing Water Face Mist Gives a Natural Glow
I have a confession. Up until last week, I had never used self-tanner on my face. Although I love a faux glow, and have tested probably 20-plus self-tanners for Allure, I’ve always been nervous about applying something to my face. Would it irritate my sensitive skin? Turn my face a frightening shade of orange that I couldn’t scrub off? Well, I can confidently say those fears have been put to bed now that I’ve tried the St. Tropez Self Tan Purity Bronzing Water Face Mist.
St. Tropez has always been my favorite brand of self-tanner, and I especially love the Purity line (please try its Bronzing Water Gel — the formula is a game-changer). The Bronzing Water Face Mist is made of “natural tanning agents,” according to the brand, which calmed my nerves about applying it to my sensitive skin. Based on my past experience with St. Tropez products, I knew I was in for subtle, buildable color, not a Paris Hilton tan circa 2003 vibe.
I first tried the face mist before bed, post-cleansing my face. I let my skin dry, but didn’t apply any moisturizer or the rest of my nighttime skin care. The mist is a clear liquid, so there’s no need to worry about a messy guide color streaking on your face or getting on your clothes. I gave the bottle a good shake as directed, then spritzed about five pumps evenly over my face, neck, and upper chest.
The mist is super fine — it didn’t leave my face feeling wet and I didn’t feel the need to blend anything with my hands. It has an intensely fruity, tropical scent that I wasn’t crazy about, but it did fade with time. I just wish St. Tropez would tone the scent down a notch.
As I mentioned, my skin gets irritated quickly because it’s naturally on the drier side, and new products sometimes make it look red and feel hot and tight. I was pleasantly surprised that my skin not only had no negative reactions to this spray, but it also felt seriously hydrating. So hydrated that I skipped my usual thick night cream and went to bed with nothing on my face, but the spray, which is also made with moisturizing ingredients, like glycerin and hyaluronic acid.
As far as results go, I was thrilled with the noticeable but believable tan I woke up to. One application is probably enough for someone with a pale skin tone, but I wanted to see how the mist would feel under makeup, so decided to do a second round before work. I again spritzed on bare skin, let it dry, and then applied my makeup as usual, and it didn’t budge all day! The second application made my all-over color a little deeper, but still stayed very natural.
Sadly, my gorgeous glow faded within two days, which isn’t surprising considering I washed my face twice a day, exfoliated, and slathered on oils as usual. I’ll definitely be working the St. Tropez Self Tan Purity Bronzing Water Face Mist into my weekly routine, and have already recommended it to my roommate — and to all if you, as it just won an Allure Best of Beauty award for 2020.
