‘Fresh Off the Boat’ Makeup Artist Cindy Miguens Shares ’90s Beauty Tips: Interview

Before there was ’90s nostalgia in the form of Kim Kardashian’s ’90s Mattes Collection or the Lizzie McGuire reboot, there was Fresh Off the Boat. The ABC sitcom debuted in 2015, and it will have given us seven seasons of ’90s beauty looks before it heads off the air this February. The woman responsible for said nostalgia-inducing looks is makeup department head Cindy Miguens, who has plenty of experience crystallizing a specific moment in time with a shade of lip liner or brow style.

Before Miguens turned Constance Wu into a ’90s-style sitcom star, she set the tone of makeup in the 2010s with Pretty Little Liars. Before that, she spent 2003 to 2007 encouraging us all to wear shiny lip gloss as a makeup artist on The OC. As we head into a new decade, we checked in with Miguens about how she created the past and her beauty hopes for the future.

As head makeup artist, Miguens is primarily responsible for Fresh Off the Boat stars Constance Wu and Randall Park. In the sitcom format, she explains, the audience wants the cast to look familiar and comforting. That means she got to design an overarching makeup concept for Wu that stayed true for the show’s entire seven seasons.

“I keep [Wu] true to the ’90s makeup look, with eyeliner, lip liner, and a plump lip. Everything is a bit more outlined. Brows were defined, lips were defined, eye shadow always has an accompany liner,” she says. She does a contour (“but not a Kardashian contour”) that subtly accents the cheekbones. Since the show is set in Florida, she also makes sure to warm up Wu’s complexion, using a combination of Anastasia Beverly Hills and Tom Ford products.

According to Miguens, there’s no particular must-have product to recreate a ’90s look — instead, it’s more about choosing the right color palette. “It was just a lot simpler than what we’re doing today,” she says. “Browns were in. Black liner, brown liner smudged out for a soft smokey look, plump lips with a nice bronze. Body shimmer was in.”
